How to Get to Belém Tower in Lisbon

Despite being one of the most famous monuments in Lisbon, Belém Tower is actually located on the waterfront at the historic district of Belém, a few kilometers west of the city center.

We recommend two travel options to get to the picturesque fortress: To catch a tram or to ride a bike.

By bike:

Cycling from downtown Lisbon to Belém is one of the best ways to explore the surrounding city. The roads are mostly flat or slightly uphill/downhill, and the journey takes no longer than a tram ride. Just cycle along the Tagus River and enjoy some of the most beautiful views.

By Tram:

The easiest way to get to Belem Tower by public transport is by tram. In the central district of Baixa at Praça do Comércio, you can take the tram 15E and travel about 45 minutes to “Lg. Princesa” stop. From there, it’s a 6-minute walk to the tower.

  1. Purchase Tickets in Advance: Avoid long lines by buying tickets online or at designated ticket booths in advance.
  2. Arrive Early: Especially during peak season or weekends, arriving early ensures shorter wait times and a more relaxed experience.
  3. Pack Comfortably: Wear comfortable shoes, as you’ll be climbing narrow stairs and walking on uneven surfaces.
  4. Consider the weather and dress accordingly: In the summer, we recommend bringing hats or caps to shield yourself from the sun and staying hydrated with water due to the elevated temperatures.
  5. Caution on Staircase: Exercise caution on the winding staircase from the King’s room to the Tower terrace, as it can be steep. Take your time, and allow others to pass.
  6. Take advantage of an audio guide: If you wish to explore the vast palace complex on your own, an Audio Guide is your perfect companion. There are multilingual audio guides available. To book a ticket including an audio guide, check out our ticket recommendations.
